Special visit to the Grand Shoin on Mt. Hieizan - Visit the memory of Kibei Murai, Japan's King of Tobacco - [Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28, 2023].

Chorakukan, the Kyoto villa of Kichihei Murai (designed by James Gardiner), which welcomed distinguished guests from Japan and abroad during the Meiji era.
The Daishoin, the main residence of Kichihei Murai, moved from Sannodai, Akasaka, Tokyo to the premises of Enryakuji Temple, Hieizan (designed by Goichi Takeda).
For the first time in five years, we are offering a special plan to view the two residences at the same time.

During your stay at Hotel Chorakukan, you can tour the Chorakukan, including the third floor, which is usually closed to the public, as well as
Through a guided tour of the "Great Shoin" on Mt. Hiei by Mr. Fukuichi Kobayashi, Secretary General of the Hieizan Enryakuji Temple Worship Department

Hieizan Grand Shoin Special Viewing Plan

  • 2 persons per room per night from 165,000 yen
  • The above rates are per room, per night, double occupancy, including dinner and breakfast (service charge and consumption tax included). A separate accommodation tax of ¥500-1,000 per person will be added.
  • *Includes accommodation at Hotel Chorakukan (2 persons per night with 2 meals), round trip to Mt. Hiei, various worship fees, and lunch.

Hieizan Enryakuji Temple "Daishoin" (usually closed to the public)

  • A purely Japanese-style structure built mainly of Kiso cypress, in which Kibei Murai invested his vast wealth.
    It was built in 1919 in Akasaka Sannodai, Tokyo as "Sannoso," the main residence of Kichihei Murai,
    In the fall of 1928, it was moved to Enryakuji Temple on Mt. Hiei as a commemorative project for the Emperor Showa's Grand Enthronement and the 1,150th anniversary of the founding of Mt.
    Today, it boasts of its grandeur as the "Daishoin," a guest house that welcomes special guests of Enryakuji Temple.

Enryakuji Temple Hieizan Tour Schedule

  • 11:00 Departure from Chorakukan
  • 12:00 Arrival at Hieizan Enryakuji Temple, guided tour of the temple grounds by the Director of the Worship Department (East Pagoda, Main Lecture Hall, Nemoto-chudo Hall)
  • 12:40 Lunch (vegetarian food) at Enryakuji Kaikan
  • 13:40 Tour of Daishoin (special Dharma talk 40 min., special viewing 40 min.)
  • 15:00 Departure from Hieizan Enryakuji Temple to Chorakukan/Kyoto Station if desired
  • You can choose either check-in day or check-out day for your visit.
